Rhoads Site Kickapoo Artifact Exhibit at the SIU-Carbondale Museum

As part of Illinois Archaeology Awareness Month, the Center for
Archaeological Investigations (CAI) and Southern Illinois University
Museum have organized an exhibit entitled "People of the Prairie: The
Archaeology of the Rhoads Site, an Early Nineteenth Century Kickapoo
Village in Central Illinois" at the SIU Museum on the Carbondale
campus. The Rhoads site excavations, which were funded by IDOT, were
conducted by the ISM in the early 1970s as part of the environmental
studies associated with the construction of I-55.  The artifacts
recovered by the ISM investigations are currently on loan to SIU from
the ISM  as part of a contract between IDOT and the CAI for the
completion of the artifact analysis and report for the Rhoads site
investigations. The SIU Museum exhibit incorporates many of the
Rhoads site artifacts including gun parts, silver and brass
ornaments, smoking pipes, and figurine parts that have never been
previously displayed to tell the story of the late 18th to early 19th
century Kickapoo of central Illinois. The exhibit, which  opens
September 6, will run through mid-December.
